Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast – Fire Strategy Report, Engineering

A new 12 story critical care unit development for the existing Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast required LWF to produce a Fire Strategy Report to include the new build in the overall site fire plan, alternative fire engineering solutions, and negotiation over building regulations approval.

Description of the Project:

Phase 2B of the Royal Victoria hospital development is located at the south west of the existing hospital site. The new Critical Care Unit developments is made up of 12 storeys. This unit comprise A&E on the ground level, four operating theatres which are linked to the existing theatre suite, 48 critical care beds, an education centre, a burns unit for in and out patients, and a helipad on the roof. The layout has been designed such that visitor accommodation and circulation around the perimeter, separated from the clinical areas and the critical care beds by glazed screens with internal blinds. 

LWF Involvement:

LWF were appointed to provide specialist fire safety advice to the design team in their continuing development proposals for the Critical Care Unit of the Royal Victoria Hospital. LWF involvement includes:

• Development of a detailed fire strategy report in which the new building fits into the overall site fire strategy;

• Providing alternative fire engineering solutions to mitigate for non-compliance issues. This includes the qualitative justification for the non-provision of sprinkler protection in the building that is greater than 30m in height;

• Negotiation with the client and approvals authorities in order to achieve building regulations approval for the project.
