The Wohl Neuroscience Institute – Fire Safety, Strategy & Engineering

LWF was appointed to provide fire safety and fire engineering services to the Wohl Neuroscience Institute build project, including the production of the Fire Strategy Report for the proposed new building. It is set to become one of the Europe’s foremost centres for multi-disciplinary neuroscience research and is based at the heart of Kings College campus in London.

Description of the Project:

The facility at Denmark Hill campus is designed to house the Wohl Neuroscience Institute, an additional research centre that will allow King’s College London to bring together some of the best researchers in the world with the very latest scientific technologies to advance understanding of neurological diseases. The development comprises new laboratories for 70 workbenches, write-up space for over 220 researchers and the Biological Science Units accommodating animal holding rooms within the basement level.

LWF Involvement:

LWF are appointed to provide fire safety and fire engineering services to the project including the production of the Fire Strategy Report for the proposed new building. Key services provided include:

•Development of fire strategy reports to support the fire safety design of the bioscience research centre from planning up to technical design stage;

•Provide a high level review of the sprinkler protection system within the basement level by identifying the pros and cons;

 •Propose hybrid fire engineered solution to compensate for the non-compliance identified on basement ventilation;

•Liaise with authorities having jurisdiction, i.e. building control authorities, Local Fire Services, King’s College London fire safety officer, to ensure continuing understanding and agreement of the fire strategy principles.
