Gatwick Airport Train Station – Fire Strategy, Fire Risk, Design Review

LWF was appointed to provide fire safety and fire engineering services for the refurbishment work at Gatwick Airport railway station during the feasibility and concept design stages. The project comprised complete remodelling and extension of the existing concourse including the stairs and escalators that lead to it.

Description of the Project:
Gatwick railway station is directly linked to the South Terminal and offers a non-stop service to London. The proposed refurbishment work comprised complete remodelling and extension of the existing concourse including the stairs and escalators that lead to it. Lifts were proposed to be incorporated into the design in order to provide safe egress for mobility impaired people in the event of a fire at the station. 

LWF Involvement:
LWF were appointed to provide fire safety and fire engineering services for the refurbishment work at Gatwick Airport railway station on the feasibility and concept design stages. The intent was to increase the customer capacity. The key services provided include:

  • Review options and concept designs for the station;
  • Develop design concepts and scenarios including non compliance issues, risks and hazards;
  • Coordinate with the client and design team;
  • Prepare qualitative design review outline design statement;
  • Prepare fire strategy statement report;
  • Means of escape assessment for different fire scenarios;
  • Liaise with approvals authority for fire safety approval of the development.
