The Wohl Neuroscience Institute - Fire Safety, Strategy & Engineering
LWF was appointed to provide fire safety and fire engineering services to the Wohl Neuroscience Institute build project, including the production of the Fire Strategy Report for the proposed new building. It is set to become one of the Europes foremost centres for multi-disciplinary neuroscience research and is based at the heart of Kings College campus in London.
Qatar Education City Convention Centre Fire Strategy, Fire Safety
One of the largest convention centres in the Middle East, The Qatar Education City Convention Centre is located on the outskirts of Doha, the capital of Qatar. LWF was asked to provide fire safety and fire engineering services to the project and to produce the Fire Strategy for the new build.
Unison Headquarters Fire Engineered Solutions, Evacuation Modelling
The Unison HQ development in London comprised an office building and residential tower with the two occupancies separated at basement level. The office block contained a central atrium linking ground to fourth floors and a tower. The project brief included; fire engineering solutions for areas of non-compliance, means of escape modelling, atrium design, fire strategy report and structural fire assessment.
Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast Fire Strategy Report, Engineering
A new 12 story critical care unit development for the existing Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast required LWF to produce a Fire Strategy Report to include the new build in the overall site fire plan, alternative fire engineering solutions, and negotiation over building regulations approval.
Bristol University Bioscience Building Fire Design, Fire Engineering, CFD
A new building was proposed on the Bristol University Campus with two wings, one to house a laboratory and the other, for office occupation. LWF was asked to provide a full review of the proposed design and provide Fire Engineered Design solutions, CFD and Fire Strategy.
Bournemouth Pavilion Gardens Fire Safety, Fire Engineering design
A five story leisure complex was proposed to house a casino, retail outlets, restaurants, external terrace, multi-screen cinema and ancillary accommodation at the spiral level. LWF was appointed to provide fire safety engineering services for the shell and core design stages.
Gatwick Airport Train Station Fire Strategy, Fire Risk, Design Review
LWF was appointed to provide fire safety and fire engineering services for the refurbishment work at Gatwick Airport railway station during the feasibility and concept design stages. The project comprised complete remodelling and extension of the existing concourse including the stairs and escalators that lead to it.
Middlesex University Hendon Hatchcroft Fire Engineering Design strategy
The three storey Hatchcroft new build is part of the Middlesex University Hendon Development and consists of a variety of laboratories and teaching areas. LWF reviewed the design, provided Fire Engineering input and developed a fire strategy report.
Middlesex University Hendon Development Phase III Means of Escape
LWF provided fire engineering services at the design stage of Phase III of the Middlesex University Hendon development, which comprises three stand alone campus blocks. A detailed Fire Strategy report was also produced including means of escape modelling, passive and active fire safety systems and the provision of fire compartmentation plans.
Fortnum & Mason Fire Safety Feasibility Study, Means of Escape
The prestigious Fortnum & Mason department store in Piccadilly project consisted of refurbishment of retail space over six floors and five new restaurants. LWF undertook a feasibility study including fire safety provision, optimisation for means of escape and defined performance criteria for smoke control, fire alarm and fire suppression.
Basingstoke College of Technology - design assessment, means of escape
The proposal for the new Basingstoke College of Technology (BCoT) comprised of four storeys, to contain teaching facilities for a number of different faculties. LWF was asked to provide assessment of design, means of escape design, assessment of fire risk, atrium design, assessment of fire service access and facility requirements.
Uxbridge College - Hayes Campus Redevelopment fire strategy report
LWF was appointed to provide fire safety and fire engineering services to the proposed construction of the Hayes Campus redevelopment for Uxbridge College. LWF reviewed the design, provided a fire strategy report, analysis of tender returns in relation to fire safety strategy.
Tweed House fire engineering consultancy, fire strategy report
LWF has played an active role in the development and concept design of the building, which comprises a 16 storey tower and a 5 storey low-rise element, by providing fire engineering consultancy services. LWF also developed an integrated fire strategy report.
The British Museum Fire safety, fire engineering techniques, evacuation
The British Museum occupies approximately one million square feet of Grade 1 Listed buildings in Bloomsbury, central London. The occupation is diverse and split between public display areas, departmental research and storage, administration and support services. LWF provided a fire safety report, undertook fire engineering techniques and constructed a computer-based evacuation model.
Madrid Xanadu Shopping and Leisure Centre Smoke removal, fire engineering
As an introduction to performance based Fire Engineering in Madrid, Spain, LWF developed a solution for a large open retail shopping centre comprising a two level retail shopping and leisure centre. The design looked at smoke removal methods, improving base fire systems to eliminate the need for more onerous demands of fire rating and travel distance limitations
Snowdome, Madrid Alternative Fire Engineering approach, evacuation model
LWF was asked to have an input into the development of a skiing facility comprising the main skiing area (single story built on a slope) with associated changing facilities. LWF worked using alternative fire engineering methods to produce a fire strategy including evacuation procedures and smoke management.
Sainsburys Supermarkets Waltham Factory - alternative fire engineering
The development comprised a warehouse incorporating office accommodation, welfare facilities and plant rooms but the building remained a simple structure. The aims of the client added to elements of high risk to the occupants necessitated an alternative fire engineering approach using performance based solutions, particularly in respect of the movement of smoke and the safe evacuation of occupants.
The Natural History Museum - ongoing fire safety strategy,fire engineering
For 10 years, LWF has been providing both strategic and detailed advice to enable this fine historic building to meet the rigorous demands of modern fire safety. We developed and continue to implement a fire safety strategy which involves a lateral approach using prescriptive codes where appropriate and innovative fire engineering in difficult or special areas. .

The Earth Galleries - Fire engineering, fire modelling, evacuation & smoke
In 1996 a successful lottery bid enabled the make-over of the traditional geological Museum into the high profile and high-tech Earth Galleries. LWF was brought in to provide fire engineering solutions including the use of fire modelling, evacuation modelling and smoke transport modelling.
Block of Flats in Essex - Mechanical Smoke Control, alternative engineering
A new block of flats in Rayleigh Essex, comprising of two floors with possible expansion to a third to accommodate a further 10 flats. LWF were asked to consider an alternative solution in respect of ventilation of smoke.
Restoration of a 1730's Historic Building Fire Risk assessment, ignition
The proposed restoration project of Christ Church, Spitalfields London required an assessment of ignition and fuel load. The main aspects of concern were arson, naked flame associated with candle use and electrical sockets.
West Middlesex University Hospital - Fire safety strategy, Fire engineering
LWF was commissioned by developers Bouygues (UK) to develop a fully cohesive fire safety strategy for a major new-build hospital, incorporating the re-development of an existing adjoining hospital wing. The project involved fire engineering techniques to bridge shortcomings in the proposed scheme.
Flying Flowers, Retreat Farm holistic fire safety strategy, evacuation
In 2005, Lawrence Webster Forrest was appointed by Flying Flowers Ltd to provide advice on a fire escape strategy within an existing greenhouse building, Retreat Farm in Jersey. The main aspect requiring investigation was the means of safely evacuating the building in event of fire recognising that the internal lining to the roof panels do not meet the classifications as prescribed in Approved Document B.
